08:40 pm: Another Giant Has Passed
Just found out that a dear friend, Robert (Bob) Zehnder passed from the earth on January 22, 2007. Bob was a private grape breeder in Summerville, South Carolina who worked with muscadine-bunch grape hybrids. That wouldn't mean anything to the average person, but it was exceptionally valuable for grape growers because Bob created grapes that would grow without spray in the disease-ridden climate of South Carolina.
More than what he did, Bob was a true gentleman in all the best senses of the word. Kind, willing to share his work with all who had interest, caring, and someone with a huge love of plants. There is no way to list all he did in this space, just that he was an amazing person.
Bob was one of a group of private breeders I got to know when I first started, and he was the last of them. Now the work must pass to other generations.
More than that, I just plain miss him.
